Quiet Mellow Corporate Camping is the Key to Team Building
15 August 2010There are few group activities that promote bonding, relaxation, stress-less and tension-less interaction better than sharing the peaceful quite and comfort of a weekend camping trip. From the setting up of camp, cooking, hiking and trail blazing of any kind till its time to pack up and say goodbye till start of work on Monday. Stories of the good times will foster relationships that corporate managers could only hope to build by any other means. It works for the Scouts, for church groups and now it works for corporate America.
Sports activities can be bonding activities but they tend to also promote domineering and survival of the fittest mentality. Okay for a bunch of warehouse guys but maybe not for the order processing team. In fact competitive activities at company gatherings could even have just the opposite effect of team building. Its a borderline issue that shows up the difference in personality types rather than the commonality and single minded purpose that a healthy camping trip can demonstrate.
When cooperation and group thought is passively demonstrated it is more likely to sink in for the long term than a panic driven rush of adrenalin especially if the outcome is the same. As in the tent came without instructions but it was easy to figure out when one group handled the frame work while the other group each took a side and untangled the material that made up the walls while others untangled the cloth ties that were knotted.
